In 2001 the Oregon Archaeological Society celebrated its 50th birthday!

Since the OAS was founded in 1951 our members have donated thousands of hours to help professional archaeologists on projects ranging from Wakemap Mound and Fort Vancouver to Forest Service rock art recording in the Columbia Gorge. Members have traveled all over the West, and even further, to volunteer their time, energy and expertise to important Passport In Time (PIT) projects.

As we move into our second half-century we have big plans to make the OAS an even more exciting organization. We want to expand training opportunities for members and the public, give more scholarships and grants, and keep the flow of fascinating speakers strong.

Let’s review some of the great things that we’ve done over the past 50 years.

First, our free monthly meetings at OMSI feature fantastic guest speakers and presentations on many aspects of archaeology.

Our training program classes and lectures have given a jumpstart to hundreds of members and students. The six-Saturday OAS basic training course is the envy of archaeological organizations across the country. Professional archaeologists seek out volunteers who have been through our extensive introductory training!

Every year the OAS organizes a number of exciting field trips to interesting areas in the Northwest.

OAS has completed and published 11 professional quality archaeological papers and booklets.

Every year OAS gives out scholarships and grants to worthy students and members.

If you like, you can designate your donation to go toward either the Jones (for college student projects) or Loring (for OAS member projects) funds.

In the areas of public outreach and education, members are regularly invited to speak to schoolchildren about different facets of archaeology. What a great chance to reach the professionals and volunteers of the future!

We also inform and educate the public at community events like the annual Wintering In festival at Sauvie Island and the annual Oregon Archaeology Celebration. These events expose thousands of visitors to archaeology.

And last, but certainly not least, huge number of exciting field trips that are offered to us each year thanks to the hard work of the folks on the Fieldtrip Committee.

Don’t forget that your contribution to the OAS is totally tax deductible. OAS is a certified 501c3 non-profit organization so every dollar qualifies as a tax deduction.
