Presenter: Dan Martin. 7 p.m. general meeting, speaker at 7:45 p.m, free and open to the public. OMSI, Portland, OR

Dan Martin, Archaeologist, CH2M HILL What is a “Knoxit” bottle, how is it related to a glass syringe found nearby, and what do they mean? Archaeologist Dan Martin was confronted with these objects and questions when he was involved in the analysis of artifacts from the excavation of the Helen Gordon Child Center at Portland State University. Martin’s presentation is a culmination of his work from both the PSU excavation as well as his work in the Restricted District of Sandpoint, Idaho during the construction of a traffic bypass. He will identify and provide a context for the excavated artifacts using photographs, non-archaeological resources for fragment identification, and historic and contemporary journal articles, textbooks and ads that further the understanding of the contraceptive methods and the treatment of venereal diseases as practiced during that time.

Scott Thomas to Discuss Clovis Lithic Flakes at March 6Meeting
From 5:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. prior to the March 6, 2012 meeting in the OMSI auditorium, Scott Thomas (archaeologist with the BLM in Harney County, Oregon) will present a short in-service for members on identifying Clovis overshot lithic flakes that are typical of the knapping technique attributed to the Clovis culture. This in-service will help us identify and broaden our reach of understanding of the areas the Clovis culture may have been in. Scott will bring examples of overshot flakes and some projectile points from the Harney County/BLM collection and discuss some of the other Clovis biface thinning characteristics. Scott points out that once we become more attuned to the overshot flakes and bifaces with overshot scars, we can begin to increase our number of possible Clovis places during our surveys and field work. Dennis Torresdal will demonstrate the unique knapping technique that produces such overshot flakes. (Pat O'Grady will be the guest lecturer for the general meeting that evening, updating members on his 2011 field excavations and surveys in and around Sheep Mountain in Harney County, an identified Clovis site).
