The Oregon Archaeological Society (OAS), a non-profit organization, was founded in 1951 as important Native American sites, including Celilo Falls, were about to be flooded by The Dalles Dam on the Columbia River. At that time many believed that sites should be excavated before they disappeared beneath the water.

OAS stresses the importance of working with professional archaeologists in the advancement of knowledge, and educating the public. To that end OAS adopted a code of ethics, recognizing the importance of State and Federal laws which protect archaeological sites.

Come join the OAS for an educational, fun, hands-on experience. Learn about historic and prehistoric archaeology in the history-rich Pacific Northwest. We provide a forum where people can learn, share ideas, and participate in archaeology. No prior experience is necessary, only a willingness to learn and to have fun with others who are interested in archaeology.
