Roy F. Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Scholarship grant shall be in a range of $200 to $1500.

Eligibility:

The Scholarship Grant will be awarded to and individual who is:

  1. A college or university student of archaeology.

  2. Engaged in, or preparing to engage in , a project or experiment, the results of which will add to the body of knowledge of the archaeological or anthropological sciences.

Candidate search and selection:

A member of the OAS Scholarship Committee will then send letters to the Anthropology Department or the equivalent at a minimum of three colleges and/or universities in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. These letters will include:

  1. A copy of this Scholarship directive.
  2. A request that the appropriate school official nominate a candidate from the school and/or advise all qualifying students of the availability of this scholarship and encourage them to apply directly.
  3. Notice of February 1 as the deadline for nominations and application to be received by OAS.

At or before the March Board Meeting, the OAS Scholarship Committee will present the applicants for review by the OAS Board. One or more applicants will be presented for approval at the April general membership meeting. The following will be presented:

  1. A biographical sketch of the student.
  2. An outline of the project.
  3. A summary of the applicant's qualifications.

If no suitable nominations or applications are received, the Board need not award the Scholarship grant for that year and the money in the fund will be retained and added to the next grant awarded.

Application Guidelines:

Priority will be given to application that demonstrate:

bullet

knowledge of the scientific methods and procedures of archaeology.

bullet

knowledge of scientific literature on the proposed subject

bullet

a contribution to the understanding of archaeology of the Northwest.

bullet

a contribution that will fill a void in current ongoing research.

Applications must include:

  1. A cover letter including a brief biographical sketch of the applicant with school status and study interests, a brief description of the project to be carried out, and an accompanying letter of recommendation from a professor in his/her department.

  2. An application in narrative form with:

    a.  Introduction to the project, including project goals and objectives.

    b.  A description of the need for the proposed research

    c.  A description of the methodology and procedures to be used, including:

  1. Project time line.

  2. Project budget.

  3. Personnel roster, including a description of the level of commitment and experience of the principal project personnel.

Review Criteria:

The grant candidates will be nominated by the Board of Directors at their March meeting and based on the following criteria:

  1. Significance:
    bulletThe degree to which the proposed project will contribute to the body of archaeological literature
    bulletEvidence that the proposed project will fill a void in current archaeological literature.
  2. Merit of approach:
    bulletEvidence of the use of standard research methods and procedures.
    bulletExtent to which the proposal reflects relevant and current scientific knowledge relating to the project.
  3. Feasibility:
    bullet    The ability to accomplish the project's objectives using the plans and resources described in the application.
    bulletAdequacy of the applicant's plans to document and disseminate the results of the project.
  4. Applicant Qualifications:
    bulletEvidence of a commitment to the pursuit of personal excellence in avocational archaeology.
    bulletDemonstrated ability of applicant to effectively use and manage available resources.

Dissemination:

Within one year of receiving the award the recipient shall prepare a paper and/or article describing the work and presenting results, available for publication in SCREENINGS. An OAS program presentation and other means of dissemination are encouraged.
