 The reading list below is meant to assist teachers in developing their lesson plans or coursework in the study of Oregonšs archaeology or of archaeology in general. Where possible, some age or grade level information has been provided.

 Non-fiction

A Guide to the Indian Tribes of the Pacific Northwest, by Robert H. Ruby. 

Archaeology of Oregon* - C. Melvin Aiken Provides a good overview of the prehistory of Oregon and some of the Pacific Northwest. Available from the Bureau of Land Management and in public libraries.

"Prehistoric America: A Journey Through the Ice Age and Beyond", by  Miles Barton et al. Yale University Press, 2003. (Also available as a DVD of the same name from the BBC.)

Columbia River Plateau Rock Art - Publication 11*, The Butte Creek Sites: Steiwer Ranch and Rattlesnake Shelter - Owl Cave*, published by OAS.

Exploring Oregon's Past: A Teacher's Activity guide for Fourth Through Seventh Grades. This Bureau of Land Management document provides an extensive variety of lesson plans for teachers who wish to include a little or a lot of archaeology in their curriculum. In addition the folks who developed the lesson plans made sure they are "aligned" with the Oregon Comprehensive Curriculum Goals (CCGs) in science, social science, art language arts and mathematics.

Smithsonian Timelines of the Ancient World. A Visual Chronology from the Origins of Life to AD 1500. Published by Dorling Kindersley and edited by  Chris Scarre.  An excellent resource for any teacher interested in global archaeology. 

Atlas of Archaeology. Published by Dorling Kindersley.  Another extremely useful classroom resource on general archaeology.
